Major life transitions, stressful events, and mental health conditions may strain family relationships and affect the psychological health of the whole family. There may be excessive arguments between family members or ongoing conflict. Family counseling focuses on the interpersonal relationships of the family members, how they relate to each other, communicate, and individuate. The counselor helps family members to listen, take others’ perspective, establish appropriate boundaries, and interact in peaceful ways. Family counseling aims to promote understanding and collaboration among family members, thereby helping the family grow and heal.
